The game of blackjack was first created in France or Spain in the seventeen hundreds and is known in France as ving-et-un, which means twenty one, and in Spain it is known as ventiuna, which is Spanish for twenty one, otherwise known as Spanish twenty one.

The name blackjack is only one name used to describe or refer to this ever popular card game. Perhaps a more accurate name would be twenty one, or one of the many variations. The reason that this popular card game is called twenty one is rather quite simple.

The main object of the game of twenty one or blackjack is basically to reach the number twenty one or as close to twenty one as is possible by combining the value of the cards that have been dealt to you. Unlike the equally famous and popular card game of poker in blackjack players compete against the dealer and not each other.
The way that blackjack works is as follows; the dealer will deal one card at a time to however many players are participating in the round. The dealer deals themselves a card up followed by a second round of card dealing, cards dealt to the player are face up.

However in this round players are individually offered the opportunity to either add cards to their hand by asking the dealer to deal them another card, this is known as hitting, or, if the player feels satisfied that the combined value of their cards is high enough then they will indicate no more cards, this is known as standing.
The dealer will now have to reach a higher combined amount in order to win the round. If either the dealer or the player exceeds the total of twenty one then it is called a bust, reaching twenty one is known as blackjack.
